Tulip
Type Design   |   Print System   |   Winter 2023

Tulip is a fully-functional typeface. It was derived from the my love of bold type. It all started when I was formally introduced to wood block type in my letterpress printing class. To make this typeface, I pulled from the technique of mass producing wood type. The most notable distinction is the roundness a router would have made in the interior corners of the characters, which would have been notched out later. These curves organically led to making a rounder font overall. As a result, the typeface has a bounciness reminiscent of spring and the tulips that come with it.

The type specimen images were able to utilize various images of tulips. The images were treated to give a nostalgic, groovy vibe to complement the character of the letterforms. The riso look that was applied creates bright colors as well as reflecting the other parts of the system, which showcase the process.
